For over 30 years, our festival has evolved from its riverside roots to become one of the largest dragon boat festivals in the United States, hosting 120+ teams across North America each year. Explore our journey of multicultural celebration, exhilarating competition, and the remarkable evolution of dragon boat racing.
WHAT IS IT
More than 2300 years ago…
The tradition of Dragon Boat Racing is an annual Chinese rite commemorating the idealistic poet and performer Qu Yuan who drowned himself in the third century B.C. to protest against his emperor's policies. Discover how this poignant event evolved into the vibrant Dragon Boat Racing we celebrate today.
HOW DID WE GET HERE
From 4 teak wood dragon boats to 30+ internationally recognized dragon boats
The Festival began in 1990 when the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York City promoted and organized the inaugural Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, which was held on the Hudson River in Battery Park City. The Festival is now an independent non-profit company organized under the laws of the State of New York and receives its funding through sponsorships by various companies. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office continues to be a substantial supporter of the festival.
The festival keeps up the age-old tradition of Dragon Boat Racing with a fleet of both traditional custom made teak boats and modern fiberglass boats, all of which conform to the International Dragon Boat Federation standards and are approved for International Dragon Boat Racing. All boats are colorfully decorated with a hand painted dragon head at the front and tail at the rear making them works of art gliding across the water. Each boat is powered by up to 20 members consisting of a drummer, a steersperson, and paddlers.
