The Chinese Music Ensemble of New York

Founded in 1961, the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York is one of the oldest and largest Chinese orchestras in the United States playing Cantonese traditional music. They play practically every type of Chinese musical instruments. Their performance features various traditional Chinese instruments and a wide variety of compositions, from ancient Chinese to modern classical.

Dragon Dance, Team Parade, and Eye Dotting: The Dragon Dance from Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute leads the teams of racers to the main stage to welcome all and together with invited dignitaries, officially kicks-off the 2024 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York with a dragon eye dotting ceremony and a performance on stage.

A Dynamic Duo of Ladies

Performing a combination of the Guzheng (Chinese zither) and Erhu (two-stringed bowed instrument), this ensemble creates a beautiful and harmonious blend of sounds. The Guzheng, played by Wei Sun, offers rich and resonant tones that provide a solid foundation and melodic structure. Meanwhile, the Erhu, played by Ping Cao, adds a delicate and expressive element. This combination effectively captures the essence of traditional Chinese music, creating an energetic and surging atmosphere reminiscent of both traditional Chinese melodies and the exhilarating Festival of Dragon Boat Racing.

Hong Kong Vocalist - Echo Chan

Echo Chan competed in and was a top 100 finalist of the Hong Kong singing competition 中年好聲音2 (Midlife, Sing & Shine! 2). He and two guest performers, Anny Peng and Paige Lai, an alum of the Guangdong singing competition 咪王爭霸 (King of Fighters) will perform a set of Chinese songs to celebrate Hong Kong pop culture and the dedication and persistent spirit of the dragon boat competition. The performance will highlight hits from the 1980s to the 2020s, including 幸福之歌 (Song of Bliss), 瀟灑走一回 (Run Without Care), 不再猶豫 (Beyond Hesitation), and many more.

Violinist extraordinaire Daisy Jopling
2:00pm - 3:00pm
Performing solo or with a group - Daisy Jopling & her Band play rock arrangements of great classical pieces, spiced up with some gypsy music, Irish folk music, tango and original compositions. Their latest album Who's Who, original violin arrangements of great songs by The Who, was released in September of 2019. See more at www.daisyjoplingband.com.

Manhattan Taiko
3:00pm - 4:00pm
A group dedicated to the art of traditional Japanese Taiko drumming. This dynamic ensemble, consisting of both new and seasoned drummers, regularly practices and performs at celebrations and events across NYC and beyond. They have recently expanded their repertoire to include additional elements like Japanese folk dance and the Sanmisen, further enriching their performances and providing a more diverse and captivating experience.

NY Shaolin Temple Kung Fu Center
4:00pm - 5:00pm
This Shaolin Kung Fu team will entertain the audience with its kung fu demonstration filled with punches and kicks. See more at www.newyorkshaolintemple.com.

Jonathan has long enchanted children with finger fables, story theater, myths, medieval legends and the lore of the Hudson River. A full-time storyteller since 1989, he’s appeared at thousands of schools, libraries, festivals, and historic sites, many in Queens. He will tell Dragon Tales for children and families, and story theater, featuring how dragon boat racing started.
